Things to Do

 
There are the Appalachian Mountains and Atlantic beaches; National and state forests and parks protected and maintained for your continued enjoyment; Sites where history was made; Lake, river, and ocean fishing; Bow and rifle hunting seasons; Hiking, camping, and horseback riding; Public and private golf courses (see the South Carolina Official Golf Guide.); Snow skiing in the winter; water skiing in the summer; Youth and adult leagues in baseball, softball, volleyball, football , soccer, and tennis; Public and private swimming pools; and Nationally acclaimed professional, university, and college sports (see our Sports page). All of these and more is available locally or within less than a half day's drive.

Also, for the individual who likes to participate in sports, the Cherokee Recreation District operates 10 parks, nine tennis courts, a swimming pool, four basketball courts, 14 baseball / softball fields, one football field, and three playgrounds. More than 17,000 young people and adults participate in the Cherokee County sports organizations each year.

Aditionally, the Cherokee County YMCA Family Center, located on the Limestone College campus, is fully equipped and staffed for team sports programs, individual and group workout programs, and swimming. Family and individual membership programs are available.

As for exciting historic battle grounds, Kings Mountain National Military Park is a prominent Revolutionary battle sight and is located northeast of Blacksburg. Famous for the 1780 battle where the colonial Patriots defeated the Loyalists, the park contains a visitors center which houses exhibits, an 18-minute film and a sales center. A 1.5 mile trail surrounds the battlefield. open daily 9:00a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Free admission.

The Cowpens National Battleground is another Revolutionary War site and is located northwest of Gaffney. More precisely, it is located 3 miles east of Chesnee, S.C. Scenic Highway 11 in Cherokee County, S.C. It is a site of a decisive American Revolutionary War battle fought on Jan. 17, 1781. Gen. Daniel Morgan's troops soundly defeated LT. Col. Banastre Tarleton's in classic military style.
